Olympus PEN-F Silver + 17mm

The Olympus PEN-F is the most advanced system camera from the successful PEN series so far. Despite the small dimensions of the compact Micro Four Thirds format, the PEN-F has the advanced optical technology of the larger, high-end Olympus OM-D cameras. Think of the 5-axis image stabilization system, a 20 MP Live MOS sensor without ‘passthrough’ filter and a built-in electronic viewfinder with real-time preview of changes made.

Just like any Micro Four Thirds system camera, the PEN-F is made for spontaneous street photography without a tripod. Therefore, this model is also more compact and lighter than the much larger SLRs. And also in terms of performance, this is a better choice than many DSLRs. The fast repetitive shooting mode of 10 fps does make it, for example, easy to follow moving objects. Moreover, the flexible tiltable and rotatable LCD is ideal for shooting photo and video recordings in difficult situations.

Electronic Viewfinder

The iconic aspirations of the PEN-F are not limited to the design. Street photography has never before been so popular and the new PEN is equipped with a built-in electronic viewfinder that gives the feeling of a classic rangefinder and helps focus with focus peaking and an image magnification of 0,62x. The electronic viewfinder features a large OLED display with a resolution of 2.36 million dots, that shows a real-time preview of the chosen settings.

New creative options

The large metal button at the top of the PEN-F provides access to the latest creative features. Olympus has managed to add many filters and options that moreover can be applied easily. The Creative Dial can operate four features, including two features that are new to the PEN series: Monochrome Profile Control and Colour Profile Control. The first provides a gradation curve, film grain, shadow adjustment and black white filtereffects with three available presets. Colour Control Profile also provides for three settings, and is related to the gradation curve.

No low-pass filter for higher resolution

This unique camera is packed with advanced technology. The well-proven 5-axis image stabilization system in conjunction with a new 20-megapixel MOS sensor, with no low-pass filter, allows an even longer exposure at lower ISO speeds. The new sensor offers a 25% better resolution while not affecting the amount of noise and dynamic range. The results are simply impressive, especially in spontaneous freehand shot photos. And that is exactly where the lightweight PEN-F excels.

Ultrafast response

In the case of spontaneous shootings also the response time is of great importance. It is a common misconception that DSLR cameras react faster than comparable Micro Four Thirds cameras. The PEN-F proves otherwise with one of the shortest shutter release delays in its class or the time between pressing the shutter and the actual recording. The autofocus works extremely quickly thanks to the Eye Detect AF function and the touch screen on which you can directly designate a focal point.
